The nose is not only made up of flesh and cartilage that covers the front part of the face. The nose is an important part of the respiratory system as it helps to breathe. There are holes in the nose called nostrils. It has two nasal cavities separated by the septum, which is a cartilaginous wall. Inside the face there is a complex duct system called sinus cavities and air pockets. The sinus cavities lie behind the skull, just above the oral cavity, in the cheekbones, between the eyes and eyebrows. All of these areas are responsible for breathing, sniffing, tasting and part of the immune system.

Unlike other senses, the nose not only affects the olfactory system, but also cooperates with other sensory organs. Without the nose, the body would hardly be able to taste the food. What people call taste is actually a mixture of different senses. One of these senses is smell. When food is eaten, the nose smells the food and sends information to the mouth through a way called smell. For this reason, it has been determined that people with colds or other nasal ailments cannot get the taste of food.
It also plays a role in the nasal hearing system. The nasopharynx is surrounded on both sides by the eustachian tubes. These tubes connect the nasopharynx to the middle ear. The nasopharynx fills the middle ear with air and equalizes the air pressure in the ear to the surrounding atmosphere. This is an important part of the hearing system.

Nose Diseases

Because the nose is a complex system, there are many things that can go wrong. The most common ailments in adults are difficulty in breathing through the nose, nasal congestion, nasal allergies, chronic sinus infections and nasal polyps.

Factors Causing Odor Loss

According to the researches, the most common causes of loss of sense of smell can be listed as:

  • The leading cause is viral infections such as the common cold,
  • Sinus infections,
  • Nasal polyps,
  • Using Tobacco,
  • Head trauma
  • In very rare cases, tumors can cause a loss of smell.

In the natural aging process, some odor loss occurs, similar to vision and hearing loss.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is another common nose disease. It may be due to allergies, viruses and / or certain diseases. Some symptoms that are detected:

  • Weakness
  • Fear
  • Cough
  • It can be counted as a stuffiness.

It is a condition for which you should visit a doctor for treatment. Medical treatments can often be sufficient in acute sinusitis, while chronic sinusitis may sometimes require surgical cleaning of the sinuses and opening and widening the sinus mouths.

Deformation of nasal bone and / or cartilage

The nasal septum, the flat cartilage plate in the center of the nose, can be damaged and pushed left or right. It can continue its development with a deformed nose. This condition is called deviated nasal septum. A deviated septum can cause respiratory problems and various ailments as one or both of the nasal chambers are smaller than they should be. Generally, in this case, surgical correction is possible.

Sinus Stuffines or Nasal Stuffines.

Many people have sinus stuffines or nasal stuffines problems. This can be caused by swollen tissue or mucus blockage. These problems can be treated at home. For example, washing the nasal passages with saline, especially during infection periods. It has an effect on keeping nasal passages clean, cleaning allergens and forehead mucus layer, alleviating sinus infections, and potentially reducing the need for antibiotics.

If sinus stuffines problems are not solved, a doctor should be consulted.

Runny Nose And Bleeding

A runny nose can be caused by mucus production in the nose. The production of mucus can be triggered by anything that irritates or infects the nose, such as an allergy, cold, flu, or dust. Nosebleeding occur when tiny blood vessels in the nose break due to dry air, irritants, chemicals entering the nose or other various factors. When nosebleedings continue for a long time, it is beneficial to take medical help.

Although nasal stuffines seems to be a common and insignificant problem, it is beneficial to treat it before it progresses. Otherwise, It can lead to various problems such as snoring, high blood pressure, hoarseness, throat inflammation etc. Especially in patients with prolonged nasal stuffines and snoring, sleep apnea, the problem should be corrected with treatment according the result of examination. Otherwise, sleep apneas in adults may cause cardio-circulatory system problems and an increase in the risk of diseases such as stroke and paralysis as a result of short-term oxygen deprivation.

Nasal Polyp and Tumors

Polyps may occur as a result of inflammation in the nasal cavity or sinus. They are generally harmless. However, if they grow, they can cause respiratory obstruction. For this reason, it should be treated with medication or surgical intervention recommended by the doctor.

Generally, tumors in the nose are benign and called papillomas. There is a risk of turning into malignant tumors.
